OUTLINE

It was once thought that humankind could conquer the infectious diseases. However, even in the 21st century, we have been experiencing newly emerging infectious diseases, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), avian influenza, pandemic influenza A(H1N1) with swine origin and COVID-19 etc. These emerging diseases remind us of continuous threats posed by infectious diseases. With rapidly progressing globalization, the risk of global spread of infectious diseases is higher than ever.
We, at the Department of Virology, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, are conducting laboratory-based, clinical and field epidemiological researches on various infectious diseases, not only in Asia but also in Africa and South America. We are also investigating infectious disease control in collaboration with public health officials and clinicians.
