The history of Pediatric Surgery in Tohoku University dates back to the era of Professor Katsura (1941-63), the Second Department of Surgery. At that time, the first research group of pediatric surgery was founded in Japan. Succeeding to Professor Katsura, Professor Morio Kasai was one of the founders in the early era of pediatric surgery in Japan. In particular, the surgical treatment for biliary atresia (Kasai’s procedure) has long been known as a world-class achievement. The Department of Pediatric Surgery as a clinical practice was established in 1983 and was promoted to a course in 1990.
In our department of pediatric surgery, we treat children with surgical diseases except for the heart, brain, and skeletal muscle.
In the field of clinical research, we are mainly focusing on treatments of biliary atresia, intestinal failure, and childhood cancers. Surgery for biliary atresia (Kasai’s procedure) is a definitive treatment developed in our department for the first time in the world. We have a long-term treatment experience in many cases with excellent results. We also experienced the largest number of intestine transplantation in Japan. As a practice of intestinal rehabilitation program, we have been treating many patients with intestinal failure and conducted many studies.
As a basic research, in addition to the above contents related to biliary atresia and intestinal failure, we have been also researching on regenerative medicine aiming for tracheal regeneration.

東北大学小児外科教室の歴史は東北大学医学部第二外科（当時）の桂重次教授の時代（1941-63）にまでさかのぼり、このときわが国最初の小児外科診療研究グループ作られました。その後を継いだ葛西森夫教授は、日本に小児外科学の創生を導いた一人で、とくに胆道閉鎖症の外科治療（葛西手術）の開発は世界に冠たる仕事として外科学の歴史に長く名をとどめております。1983年に小児外科診療科が誕生し、1990年に講座昇格となりました。
小児外科学分野では心臓、脳、骨格筋をのぞく新生児、乳児、小児の外科的疾患の臨床を行っています。
臨床研究では主に胆道閉鎖症、腸管機能不全、小児がんに関する研究を行っております。胆道閉鎖症に対する手術（葛西手術、肝門部腸吻合術）は世界に先駆けて当科で開発された治療法で、長期にわたる多数例の治療経験を有し、優れた研究実績を誇っています。また、国内最多の小腸移植の臨床経験があることから、移植の有無を問わず多くの腸管不全症を治療しておりこれまで多くの研究を行ってきました。
基礎研究では上記の疾患と関連した内容のほかに気管軟骨再生を目指した再生医療に関する研究なども行っております。
