OUTLINE

Utilizing several techniques from the medical and clinical field, the Department of Disaster Psychiatry is researching the mental impact of disasters, similar to the Great East Japan Earthquake. Considering stress was caused by a disaster, we are conducting basic research on identifying the mechanisms and treatment of psychiatric disorders, such as depression or post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). At the same time, we are also developing a biomarker which will evaluate the affect to stress on the body. Due to the wide scale ongoing investigations at disaster areas, we can grasp the mental impact of the victims from the Great East Japan Earthquake and help improve the health of disaster victims through helpful activities, such as redeveloping the mental health care system for disasters. From the knowledge we accumulate through our research, we hope to strengthen cooperation with other fields of research and to take a role in sharing with the world information to prepare and take proper measures against future disasters.
