Laboratory Introduction
Department of Urology is a division of Surgery and is concentrating to see patients who suffer from diseases of adrenal, kidney, ureter, bladder, prostate, testis, etc. since 1959. Actually we deal with patients with urogenital tumors, voiding dysfunction and incontinence, urinary stones, male infertility. We especially target diagnosis, definitive therapy, and systemic chemotherapy of prostate cancer. The Tohoku University Hospital has prepared several advanced modalities including intensity-modulated radiotherapy, brachytherapy, etc. It is well known that our department is the highest volume facility in Japan regarding laparoscopic adrenal surgery and testicular cancer treatment. A lot of patients, suffering from neurological disorders and refractory incontinence, are treated with sacral surface electrical stimulation.
The policy of the department is “minimally invasive” and “function preserving” along with cure of patients. We are also engaged in education and basic research. We have established numerous works regarding glycopathology of urogenital neoplasms.
