University of California, Berkeley Fulbright Global Scholar, Jared Mazzanti Visits Tohoku University Hospital
From April 13 to May 22, 2026, Tohoku University Hospital Future Medical and Healthcare Design Program welcomed Jared Mazzanti, Director of Strategic Initiatives, Office of the Dean at University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health, as a Fulbright Global Scholar.
The Fulbright Program is not merely a study abroad scholarship, but one of the United States’ leading international exchange programs, established to promote global peace and cooperation through mutual understanding. Selection is based not only on academic excellence, but also on leadership, public-mindedness, international collaboration, and the potential to create meaningful societal impact. Fulbright alumni have gone on to serve as leaders in academia, government, research, and industry around the world, forming influential international networks that transcend disciplines and national borders.
For more than 15 years, Mr. Mazzanti has worked at the intersection of academia and business at institutions including University of California, Berkeley, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Peking University. Following his service in the Chancellor’s Office at UCB, he has been leading strategic initiatives at the School of Public Health, where he works to build collaborative networks connecting researchers, industry partners, investors, alumni, and policymakers. He is also engaged in designing grant and acceleration programs, as well as fostering international collaboration networks with a particular focus on Asia.
During his visit to Tohoku University, Mr. Mazzanti conducted interviews and meetings with university leadership and experts, government officials, healthcare industry executives, and venture capital stakeholders, including members of Tohoku University, under the theme of “Comparative Analysis of Healthcare and Medical Device Innovation Ecosystems in Japan, India, and South Korea.”
In addition, on May 13, he delivered an online seminar on how academic institutions can create global impact through domestic and international innovation ecosystems. The seminar attracted more than 120 participants from both within and outside the university.
The networks established through this visit are expected to serve as a foundation for future international collaborative research and further advancement of academia-industry partnerships.
