●What made you decide to go to graduate school?

Basically, I decided a long time ago to be with research because of my own passion. Besides, being a Faculty staff in Bangladesh with role of teaching and research, completion of graduate school is imperative for my career development. To be honest, indeed attending to graduate school is essential to be a good researcher.

●大学院に進学しようと思った理由を教えてください

もともと私は研究をしたいという情熱があり、ずいぶん前から研究職に就こうと決めていました。また、バングラデシュで教育と研究を担う大学教員として、自分のキャリアアップのためには大学院修了は不可欠だと考えています。優れた研究者になるには大学院に行くことは必須だと考えます。

●How did you like it when you went to school?

Study in the graduate school, particularly in a developed country like Japan was a dream in my life. It was really amazing when I saw my dream comes end with existent. I still remember the morning; I woke up from the sleep with an email from my supervising professor notifying that I had selected for the graduate school with scholarship form the Japanese Government. I was so excited to share it with my good friends.

●進学してみて、どうでしたか？

大学院、特に日本のような先進国で勉強することは私の人生の夢でした。その夢が実現すると分かった時は本当に素晴らしかったです。その日の朝のことはまだ覚えています。朝起きて見た指導教授からのメールに、日本政府からの奨学金で大学院に合格したと書いてありました。私はとても興奮して、そのメールを親友たちに見せたものです。

●What is your research topic and why did you choose it?

I am focusing in the area which connects epigenetics to metabolism. Briefly, my research is designed to explore how cells regulate epigenetic perturbations to modulate the metabolism in low methionine availability, specifically, epigenetic regulation of protein synthesis, protein-RNA interaction and the biological meaning of the interaction implicating post-transcriptional modifications. Both my willingness and lab focus directed me to select this topic. I really like discover the fundamental knowledge and in the area of epigenetics it is amazing for me.

●研究テーマとそれを選んだ理由を教えてください

私はエピジェネティクスと代謝をつなぐ領域に着目した研究を行っています。すなわち、低メチオニン状態における細胞内のタンパク質間相互作用に関する研究、そして代謝関連タンパク質による細胞内タンパク質合成の制御に関する研究です。私の興味と研究室の方向性が合致していたのでこのテーマを選択しました。私は基本原理の探求がとても好きなので、エピジェネティクスの分野は大変魅力的です。

●What is the lab’s atmosphere like?

I got a nice lab. The professor is an excellent mentor. He always gives priority to my idea of research and provide valuable supplements. He is stimulating and do appreciate for the work. All of the staffs and lab members are very supportive and friendly. In my lab we have the flexibility to research using a wide range of molecular biology techniques, which is very learnable to me.

●研究室の雰囲気はどうですか？

私は素敵な研究室に来ることができました。教授は素晴らしいメンターです。教授はいつも私の研究アイデアを尊重してくれ、そこに不足する点を補ってくれます。そして研究を活性化し、より良いものへと高めてくれます。スタッフや研究室のメンバーは皆、とても協力的でフレンドリーです。私の研究室では、分子生物学手法を幅広く利用した研究をフレキシブルに行えるので大変勉強になります。

●Why did you choose Tohoku University in Japan?

When I searched for Universities for my higher study abroad, I search by rank and research impact. I found Tohoku University is one of the best Universities in Japan because of its cutting-edge research. One of the important points of motivation to Tohoku University is due to having a well-organized global website where I easily got the information in English. I found the current department was matched with my research interest. All these things motivated me to choose Tohoku University.

●日本の、東北大学を選んだ理由を教えてください

私は進学先の大学を検索する際、ランクや研究インパクトで検索しました。その中で東北大学は最先端の研究を行っており、日本の大学の中でも特に優れた大学だと感じました。また、東北大学への志望動機の重要なポイントの一つは、グローバルサイトが充実していて、英語での情報を簡単に得ることができたことです。また、現在の研究室が自分の興味のある研究内容にマッチしていることもわかりました。これらのことが東北大学を選んだ理由です。

●What are the positive aspects of Tohoku University?

Firstly, the teaching and reach impact is really high. Besides, it has almost all the latest equipment and facilities to do good research. It has student dormitories to support students for at least one year at the beginning of study, which is very beneficial to cope with the new environment. Moreover, the geographical location makes this University unique, because all the large shopping malls, restaurants and amusement centers are within walking distance.

●東北大学の良いところは？

何よりも、教育と研究のインパクトが本当に高いです。その上、良い研究を遂行するために必要な最新の設備と施設がほぼすべてそろっています。また学生寮も完備されており、勉強を始めてから1年間は学生をサポートしてくれるので、新しい環境に慣れていく上で非常に助かります。また、大型ショッピングモールやレストラン、アミューズメント施設などが徒歩圏内にあるという地理的な条件も、この大学をユニークなものにしています。

●What are your goals and expectations for the future?

I want to end up my graduate school with a good discovery in my research. I hope, with the skill obtained from Tohoku University graduate school of Medicine I would be able to conduct independent and collaborative research. In near future, I want to Join this graduate school again for my post-doctoral study and I want to apply for JSPS post-doctoral fellowship to support me. Upon completion of graduate school, I want to return back to my home country to serve my country. I am very much interested to do collaborative research with Tohoku University.

●今後の目標や抱負を教えてください

私は、研究で何か素晴らしい発見をして大学院を修了したいと思っています。そして、東北大学大学院医学系研究科で得たスキルを活かし、独立した研究者として共同研究ができるようになりたいと思っています。近い将来、ポスドクとしてに再びこの研究科での研究に参加したいと考えており、日本学術振興会のポストドクトラルフェローシップに応募する予定です。大学院修了後は、母国に戻って国のために貢献したいと思っています。 東北大学との共同研究にとても興味があります。

●How is your life in Sendai?

Sendai is a very good place to live because of having a large forest area, little snow in the winter and comfortable pleasant summer. There are many places to roam around. We have a good Bangladeshi community in Sendai and community people are very cooperative. Besides, I have some good friends from Bangladesh, other countries, and Japan, they never let me to be lonely.

●仙台の暮らしはどうですか？

仙台は広い森林地帯があり、冬は雪が少なく夏は快適で過ごしやすいので、とても住みやすい街です。散策する場所もたくさんあります。仙台にはバングラデシュ人のコミュニティがありますが、彼らはとても協力的です。また、バングラデシュ人、日本人、その他の国籍の良い友人達がおり、彼らのお陰で私は寂しい思いをしたことはありません。

●Message for other international students.

仙台は広い森林地帯があり、冬は雪が少なく夏は快適で過ごしやすいので、とても住みやすい街です。散策する場所もたくさんあります。仙台にはバングラデシュ人のコミュニティがありますが、彼らはとても協力的です。また、バングラデシュ人、日本人、その他の国籍の良い友人達がおり、彼らのお陰で私は寂しい思いをしたことはありません。

In my leisure time, particularly on weekends and holidays, I usually visit to a nearby riverside like-Hisose river or parks like Nishi Park, Kotodai Park etc. Besides, I eat food in the restaurant or go for shopping in the downtown area. Moreover, I have visited many places in Miyagi area. Some of the places I liked most are Ogawara during cherry blossom, Shiogama during marine festival and Shichigahama sea beach in summer.

余暇、特に土日祝日には、近くの広瀬川などの河川敷や、西公園、勾当台公園などの公園に行くことが多いです。また、繁華街のレストランで食事をしたり、買い物をしたりしています。また、宮城県内のいろいろな場所にも行ってきました。その中でも特に好きな場所は、桜の時期の大河原、海祭りの時期の塩釜、夏の七ヶ浜などです。
