物事の真相解き明かす科学の世界に魅了され研究者目指す

●大学院に進学しようと思った理由を教えてください

私は子どもの頃から科学が大好きでした。常に知識欲が旺盛で、物事の真相にたどり着くために次々と質問をしていました。まるで、目に見えない世界を探り、隠された謎を解き明かそうとする探偵のような気分でした。教育を受けるにつれ、私は科学者として自らを成長させ、好奇心を満たす新しい知識を得るようになりました。将来は科学を専門にすると固く決めていたので、学部で勉強を止めたくありませんでした。そこで、自分の「学習の旅」を続けるのに最も適した場所として、東北大学大学院医学系研究科を選びました。

Since I was a child, I loved science. I was always curious about learning and I asked dozens of questions trying to get to the bottom of things. I was like a detective who seeks to explore the invisible world and help to solve hidden mysteries. As my educational journey progressed, I started developing myself as a scientist and earned new information which fed my curiosity. Given that I knew for sure that science should be the core of my future profession, I did not want to stop my studies at an undergraduate level. Therefore, I have chosen the Graduate School of Medicine of Tohoku University as the most suitable place to continue my journey.

●進学してみて、どうでしたか？

日本で高等教育を受けられる私はとても幸運です。研究室内は研究が進めやすいようにオーガナイズされ、また、研究を行うための高品質な機器を備えていることに非常に感銘を受けました。さらに、同僚や上司を交えて毎週行っているラボミーティングは、私の研究の進展に有益なフィードバックをもたらし、これからもベストを尽くしていこうという気持ちにさせてくれます。

I find myself very fortunate to be able to pursue my higher education in Japan. I am very impressed by the way the lab was organized and equipped with high-quality instruments for conducting research. Moreover, the weekly meetings offered by my lab colleagues and supervisors add useful feedback to my research progress which makes me inspired to keep doing my best. 

臓器の幅広い機能に影響を及ぼすRNAへの理解を深めたい

●研究テーマとそれを選んだ理由を教えて下さい

私の研究テーマは、RNA、特に、タンパク質に翻訳する能力を持たないRNAの一種である非コードRNAです。これらは細胞内に広く存在し、臓器の幅広い機能に影響を及ぼし、さまざまな病気への関連も明らかになっています。私がこの研究を選んだのは、未だこの分野では不明なことが多く、その理解により人類生理学や病態生理学に価値ある洞察が得られると信じているからです。

My research is dealing with RNA, specifically, the Non-coding RNAs which are a class of RNA that do not have the capacity to translate into proteins. They are extensively found in several cells and operate a wide range of functions in organisms. Moreover, they were shown to be associated with different diseases. I chose to study this because the current facts and knowledge in this area are still incomplete and I believe that an improved understanding of their functions will provide worthy insights into human physiology and pathophysiology.

●研究室の雰囲気はどうですか？

献身的で、勤勉で、心温かい研究室の一員となれたことは幸せです。皆さんの支援と親切のおかげで環境にも慣れることができました。研究室の友好的な雰囲気は、研究のみならず、日本語習得にも最善を尽くそうという気持ちにさせてくれます。

I was lucky to become a part of a group of dedicated, hardworking, and warm-hearted colleagues whose support and kindness make me feel at home. The friendly atmosphere of the lab keeps me motivated to give my best not only for my research, but also to improve my Japanese language.

●東北大学の良いところは？

私はパンデミックの最中にもかかわらず東北大学に入学できた「幸運な人」の一人で、大学が私たちに提供してくれる優れた環境と支援に対して、称賛の言葉しかありません。COVID-19の対応が素晴らしいのはもちろんですが、大学は私たちに絶えず連絡を取ってくれて、指導する準備が常に整っています。東北大学のスタッフは、ハイレベルな研究者であるだけでなく、私たちが「研究の旅」を続ける間ずっと導いてくれる協力的な指導教員でもあります。さらに東北大学は、英語によるさまざまな授業に加えて、留学生全員が利用できる優れた日本語コースを提供しており、とても満足のいく経験が得られています。

Despite being among the “lucky ones” who entered Tohoku University in the middle of a pandemic, I only have words of praise for the outstanding organization and support that Tohoku University has given us. Aside from their great COVID-19 response, they are always ready to help with their constant communication and guidance. The staff of the university are not only high-level researchers but also cooperative supervisors who are willing to guide you throughout your research journey. In addition, Tohoku University offers a variety of English-taught Programs as well as an excellent Japanese Language Course available for every International student. Studying at Tohoku University is a gratifying experience.

●日本の、東北大を選んだ理由を教えてください

日本は研究と向上への意欲、先進的で革新的な国であろうとする意識が組み合わさり、世界で最も優れた教育システムを持つに至ったと考えています。自分のアイデアを育むのに最適な環境を探したとき、東北大学は理想的な選択でした。日本のトップ大学として知られる東北大学は、神経科学の分野で最高の修士プログラムを提供しており、私の研究上の関心と日本への興味の両方に合致しています。そこで私は、文部科学省の奨学金の支援を受けて神経外科先端治療開発学分野で医学の修士号を取得することにしました。

In my opinion, Japan has one of the most excellent education systems in the world due to its commitment to research and improvement, combined with a desire to be the most forward-thinking and innovative country in the world. That is why I started searching for the best environment to cultivate my ideas, and Tohoku University stood out as the ideal choice. Reputed as the top university in Japan, Tohoku University offers one of the best Master’s Programs in the scope of Neuroscience, which corresponds to my research interests on the one hand, and my fascination with Japan on the other. Thus, I have decided to pursue my Master’s Degree in Medical Sciences at the Department of Neurosurgical Engineering and Translational Neuroscience through the support of the MEXT scholarship. 

●仙台の暮らしはどうですか？

仙台に住んでもう6カ月になりますが、とても良い印象を受けています。まず、豊かな木々や素晴らしい景観を持つ仙台の美しさに引き付けられました。さらに、外国人でも歓迎してくれる仙台の方々の寛大さとおもてなしにも感動しました。大学の寮に住むことで、さまざまなバックグラウンドや文化を持つ新しい友人とも出会い、新しい視点で物事を見ることができるようになりました。これら全てが私にとって貴重な経験になっています。

Having lived in Sendai for six months already, I am full of positive impressions. The first thing that caught my attention was the beauty of Sendai with its abundance of trees and astonishing landscapes. Furthermore, I was touched by the generosity and hospitality of the people of Sendai who make me feel welcome here even though I am a foreigner. Also, living in a university dormitory has enabled me to see things from a new perspective because I had the chance to meet new friends from different backgrounds and cultures. All in all, this has been a valuable experience for me.

●今後の目標や抱負を教えてください

修士課程修了後は、同じ研究室で博士課程に進みたいと考えています。自分の研究を通して世の中に貢献したいので、これから先の数年間でたくさんのことを学びたいです。日常生活をより快適にするために、日本語の能力も磨いていきたいと思っています。

Upon the completion of my Master’s Degree, I would like to pursue my PhD at the same Department. I am motivated to learn a lot in the upcoming years because it is my wish to do something valuable for the world through my research. Additionally, I would use this time to sharpen my Japanese language skills, as mastering the language would make one’s everyday life much easier.

休日は友人たちと一緒に仙台とその周辺を散策しています。東北地方は多くの旅行者にとってまだ見つけていない宝のようなものであり、仙台は忘れられない冒険に出るための最高の出発地だと実感しています。青葉城跡や瑞鳳殿（ずいほうでん）、多賀城の充実した図書館や塩竈の安らかな神社、松島湾の穏やかな波など、仙台とその周辺には多くの見どころがあります。伝統的なものと現代的なもののどちらを巡りたいとしても、仙台は両方を兼ね備えています。科学研究のための近代的な施設があり、すぐ近くに本格的な日本料理店がある星陵キャンパスはその好例かもしれません。

I usually spend my holidays wandering around Sendai and its surroundings with my friends. I believe that Tohoku region still remains an unexplored gem for many travelers, and I have realized that Sendai is a perfect starting point to embark on an unforgettable adventure. From the Aoba Castle ruins and Zuihoden Mausoleum, over Tagajo’s rich library and Shiogama’s peaceful shrines, to the tranquil waves of Matsushima Bay, Sendai has many things to offer! No matter if you are passionate about exploring the traditional or the modern side of Japan, Sendai is a perfect combination of both. A great example of this is Seiryo campus, which is equipped with both modern facilities for scientific research and many leisure options which are around the corner, such as authentic Japanese restaurants.
