Experiencing the pandemic in China and focusing on its psychological impact 

●大学院に進学しようと思った理由を教えてください

新型コロナウイルスの影響が世界中の医療業界に多くの課題を提示していることを認識したからです。特に、中国ではこのパンデミックが感染拡大だけでなく、人々の実際の感情や心理にも重大な影響を与え、医療対応の中で心理的な側面がどれだけ重要かを理解しました。この重要な課題に対処し、社会に貢献するためには、専門的な知識とスキルが必要だと感じ、大学院での学びは、この目標を実現するための最適な道筋だと考えました。大学院での学習を通じて、新型コロナウイルスがもたらす医療と心理的な課題について深く理解し、高度な専門知識や研究方法を身に付けることで、将来的により有益な貢献をすることができると考えました。

●Please tell us why you decided to go to graduate school.

Because I gained an awareness that the impact of COVID-19 presented medical institutions all around the world with many issues. In particular, in China the pandemic not only spread the virus but also had an enormous impact upon people’s actual emotions and mentality, and I came to understand just how important the psychological aspects were amid medical treatment. 
I felt that it in order to deal with this vital issue and contribute to society, I needed to equip myself with specialist knowledge and skills, and felt that postgraduate study was the best possible route to achieving this objective. 
I thought that, by studying at a graduate school I would be able to understand on a deep level the medical and psychological issues arising from COVID-19, and by equipping myself with the advanced expertise and research methodology I would be able to make a more beneficial contribution in the future. 

●進学してみて、どうでしたか？

学業面では、公衆衛生に関連する多くの知識を習得し、日本や世界の医療問題についてより深く理解できました。特に医療倫理の分野では、安楽死や研究倫理、医療処置に伴う倫理的問題や概念について、理解を深められました。研究室の先生方、先輩方や同級生たちは非常に親切で、多くの助言や支援を提供してくれました。彼らの存在は私にとってこの2年間不可欠なものでした。東北大学での生活はとても充実していて、大学院でのさまざまな経験を通じて、自分自身を高めることができました。

●How did you feel about going to school?

From the study aspect I was able to acquire a great deal of knowledge regarding public hygiene and to obtain a more profound understanding of medical issues in Japan and around the world. In the medical ethics field in particular, I gained a deep appreciation of the ethical issues surrounding euthanasia, research ethics and medical procedures. 
The laboratory professors, my seniors and peers were all extremely kind and provided me with all sorts of advice and help. Their presence was something absolutely essential to me over the two years. My life at Tohoku University was really fulfilling, and through my various experiences at the Graduate School I was able to improve myself.

●研究テーマとそれを選んだ理由を教えてください

私の研究テーマは「COVID-19パンデミックが高齢者介護施設入所者の心身健康及び生活の質に及ぼす影響について：横断的質問票調査」です。このテーマを選んだ理由は、中国での感染拡大期間中に市全体が封鎖される状況を経験したことが関係しています。封鎖解除後、外出すると多くの高齢者がマスクを着用していないことに気付き、若者よりも外出に興奮しているように見受けられました。新型コロナウイルス期間中の高齢者の心理状態や考えについての調査に興味を持ち、深く研究したいと考えました。高齢者介護施設入所者は、通常は外部との接触が制限されており、パンデミックの影響を受けやすい集団の一つです。この研究を通じて、高齢者の健康や生活における影響を理解し、適切な支援策を提案することが目的です。また、横断的質問票調査を通じて、複数の介護施設の入所者に対する調査を行い、客観的なデータを収集し、より包括的な結果を得ることを目指しています。

●What is your research topic and why did you choose it?

My research topic was “Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Quality of the Mental Health and Lifestyle of Residents in Care Facilities for the Elderly: A Cross-Ranging Questionnaire Survey.”  One of the reasons I chose this topic is that I experienced the situation of a total lockdown of the city the pandemic in China. After the lockdown was lifted I realized that a lot of elderly people were not wearing masks and appeared to be more excited about going outdoors than young people. I became interested in the psychological state of elderly people during the pandemic, and wanted to research in depth.
The residents in care facilities for the elderly are usually subject to restrictions about going outdoors, and are one of the groups vulnerable to the pandemic. Through my research, I aimed to gain an understanding about the impact on the health and lifestyles of elderly people, and recommend appropriate support measures. Furthermore, through the cross-ranging questionnaire survey I sought to conduct a survey of the residents of several facilities, collect objective data, and achieve more comprehensive results.

●研究室の雰囲気はどうでしたか？

研究室では先生方、先輩方、同級生、みんなが楽しく過ごしていました。日常生活や研究に関する問題があれば、いつでも先生に相談したり助けを求めたりでき、先生方はいつも親切に対応してくれました。同級生や先輩たちとも互いに助け合い、堅苦しさはなく、日常的に会話を楽しんでいました。外国人として日本に来た時、言語や環境の変化から不安を感じることがありましたが、研究室の友好的な雰囲気がすぐに不安を払拭し、修士課程の2年間を非常に楽しく過ごせました。同時に、多くのものを学ぶことができました。

●What was the atmosphere like in the lab?

Everybody in the laboratory, professors, my seniors and peers, passed their time enjoyably. If there were any problems with day-to-day life or research I was able to consult with and gain the advice of my professors, and they always responded very kindly. My peers and seniors all helped each other, the ambience was relaxed and I enjoyed everyday conversation with them. When I arrived in Japan as an overseas student I felt some anxieties about language and the environment, but these were soon swept away by the amicable atmosphere and the two years of my master’s course was spent most pleasantly. I also learned a great deal.

●東北大学の良いところは？

学生の学習と生活に大学が非常に配慮してくれているところです。私は半年間学生寮に住んでいましたが、学生寮では多くのイベントが開かれ、交流や交友を促進し、生活を豊かにしてくれました。さらに、外国人向けの日本語クラスがあり、その授業で日本語のレベルアップだけでなく、新しい友人もつくることができました。学習面では、東北大学の教授陣は極めて高度に専門的であり、学生の質問に真剣に答えてくれます。授業外でも、質問があればすぐに教授に助けを求めることができます。

● What is the best thing about Tohoku University?

It’s a place where enormous consideration is paid to the learning and daily lives of students. I lived in a student dormitory for half a year and many events were held there, interaction and friendship were encouraged and the university gave me an enriching life. Furthermore there were Japanese classes for overseas students during which I not only improved my Japanese but was also able to make new friends. On the learning side, the professors at Tohoku University are extremely professional and reply seriously to questions from students. It is possible to seek the help of professors when you have questions outside of studies. 

● 現在のお仕事について教えてください。また、大学院時代のご経験はどのように活かされていますか？

医療機関の経営支援を行っています。病院やクリニック、介護施設などの医療機関が抱えるさまざまな課題に対し、改善計画の策定から実施、そして患者さんに医療サービスとして届くまでのフェーズで支援を行っています。社会の変化に合わせて求められる、患者さん視点の医療の普及を支援することも重要な役割としています。大学院時代に修士課程で学んだ日本の医療体系や現在の医療問題に関する知識は、現在の仕事に大きく生かされています。修士課程で学んだ日本の医療制度や保険制度、高齢化社会における医療ニーズの変化などの知識を生かし、医療機関の経営支援において、現場のニーズに合わせた効果的な提案ができています。さらに、修士課程で学んだ医療倫理や研究方法論の知識は、医療機関が抱える倫理的な問題や課題に対処する際にも役立ちます。例えば、患者さんのプライバシーや人権を尊重しながら、医療サービスの質の向上や効率化を図るためのアプローチを考える際に、修士課程で学んだ倫理的な視点や研究手法が役立っています。総じて、修士学位取得の経験は現在の仕事において大変役立っています。今後も修士課程で得た知識やスキルを生かし、医療機関の経営支援を通じて、より良い医療サービスの提供に貢献していきたいです。

●Please tell us about your current job. Also, how are you using your experience from graduate school?

I am working in management support for medical institutions. I provide support for the phases from the formulation to implementation of improvement plans and up until medical care services reach patients, with regard to the varied issues that hospitals, clinics and care facilities face. I also believe that supporting the diffusion of medical care from a patient’s perspective, which is required in conjunction with social changes, is also a major role for me. 
In my current job I am putting to great use the knowledge that I acquired about the Japanese medical system and current medical issues on the master’s program during my time at the graduate school. Making the most of my knowledge gained on my master’s program concerning the Japanese medical care system, insurance system, and the changing medical needs in an ageing society, I am able to put forward effective recommendations conforming with workplace needs for management support at medical institutions. Furthermore, the knowledge I acquired on my master’s program about medical ethics and research methodology are proving to be useful in dealing with the ethical issues and problems that medical institutions are grappling with. For example, when considering approaches to achieve quality improvements in medical services and greater efficiency while respecting the privacy and human rights of patients, the ethical perspectives and research methods I learned about on my master’s program are standing me in good stead.
Overall, my experience on my master’s program are proving to be tremendously helpful in my work. I hope to continue to make the most of the knowledge and skills gained on my master’s program, and through management support for medical institutions contribute to the provision of better medical care services. 

●今後の目標や抱負を教えてください

目標は、修士課程で学んだ知識や経験を生かして、医療業界における社会的課題に貢献することです。患者さんの立場に立って良い医療サービスを提供し、そのサービスをさらに便利で利用しやすくすることが重要だと考えています。また、国際社会における医療の発展に寄与することも目標の一つです。自分の専門性を生かしながら、着実にスキルを磨き、より良い社会の実現に貢献していきたいと思います。

●What are your goals and aspirations for the future?

My goal is to maximize the learning and experiences gained on my master’s program to contribute to social issues in the medical sector. I think it is vital to provide good medical services from a patients’ perspective, and make those services easier to use. In addition, I aspire to contribute to the development of medical care in international society. While putting to use my expertise, I want to continue to steadily hone my skills and contribute to the realization of a better society.

特にお薦めしたいのは、星陵キャンパス内の美しい景色です。春になると美しい桜が咲き乱れ、その風景はとても魅力的です。普段の学業や研究で疲れた時に、このエリアを訪れて散策することで心身をリフレッシュできました。

My particular recommendation is the beautiful scenery of the Seiryo Campus. The cherry blossoms bloom luxuriantly in the spring, and that landscape is very attractive. When I was tired by everyday study and research I refreshed my mind and body by strolling around this area.
