The 4th Symposium of A3 Foresight Program “Nanoscale imaging and tracing of key molecular events in cancer biology using nanobiomaterials” was held in at Beijing, China in January 18-19, 2015.

At Opening Ceremony, Dr. Yongtao Zhang, Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and Dr. Minghua Liu, Director of National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) delivered welcome remarks. Our Dean, Prof. Ohuchi Noriaki, also introduced the link between Lu Xun, a leading figure of modern Chinese literature and Tohoku University, and the background of A3 foresight program.

Furthermore, in order to strength the connection in research and exchange activity, the signature ceremony of MOU between Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and NCNST was held.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

First of all, I am grateful to Dr. Yongtao Zhang, Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and Dr. Minghua Liu, Director of National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) for delivering welcome remarks.

I am very pleased to be here in Beijing, 2nd time in 2 years. Concerning relationship between Tohoku University and Chinese Academy, it is my pleasure to talk about a famous writer, Lu Xun who is well known in all China. He used to be a medical student in Tohoku University from 1904, more than 100 years ago. Right after my talk we have a ceremony of MOU between Tohoku University and NCNST.

This A3 foresight program focusing on nano science and technology began from June of 2013 with support by NSFC, NRF and JSPS.

The 1st meeting was held in Beijing on September, 2013, when Dr. Minghua Liu was appointed as a Director of NCNST that I knew just before this meeting. The 2nd meeting was held in Daejeon, Korea in February 2014, organized by professor Tae Young Yoon, KAIST, and the 3rd was held in Japan, on last summer near Sendai, Matsushima. This is the 4th meeting of the A3 Foresight. Until now we have been in good shape for progress with collaboration in A3 countries.

Now, The nano science and technology is the most exciting and productive area with many achievements including new technologies, such as development of target-specific anti-cancer drugs.
Finally, I hope this meeting will be successful with fruitful discussion, and our international collaboration to be continued in future as well.
