TALK 1 Prof. Clive Sabel
Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. Japan’s COVID-19 story?
Using data obtained from a number of large surveys, including JACSIS/JASTIS
and Tokyo-based mobility and social surveys, together with official government COVID-19 statistics,Professor Sabel will give an overview of the Japanese COVID-19 experience.
The talk will begin with a descriptive analysis of the rate of infection and death by prefecture from 2020 until early 2023, illustrating the Space-Time evolution of the pandemic from the major metropolitan areas to more rural prefectures.
Then, specific aspects of the disease will be explored, including the role of human mobility in shaping the observed patterns, social determinants of COVID-19, how fear of COVID-19 modified behaviour and how neighbourhood social capital might influence vaccine uptake.
Some concluding thoughts will compare the Japanese experience to elsewhere.
TALK 2 Assist. Prof. Yuanyuan Teng
COVID-19 Pandemic and Ethnic Health Disparities: The Case of Foreign Residents in Japan
Global evidence indicates that immigrants and ethnic minorities have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, both in terms of health and socio-economic aspects.
This presentation seeks to explore the health disparities experienced by foreign residents in Japan during the pandemic.
We will begin by reviewing the health disparities among ethnic minorities as documented internationally and then compare these insights with survey data and studies from Japan to provide a comprehensive understanding.
