2025.3.15 SOKAP-Connect TUPReP International Symposium ”Preparing for Future Pandemics – Lessons from Japanese Experiences -”

<Symposium Outline>
The COVID-19 pandemic not only caused enormous health damage worldwide but also significantly changed people’s lives.
In Japan, the impact was profound, but it is a noteworthy fact that the mortality rate was relatively low compared to Western high-income countries.
Currently, rebuilding preparedness for global pandemics is an urgent issue.
We aim to contribute to building a resilient society by analyzing the factors behind the differences in COVID-19 damage between Western high-income countries and Japan/Asia from multiple perspectives and disseminating lessons from Japan to the world.
To achieve this, researchers from various fields such as medicine, natural sciences, and humanities have gathered to conduct interdisciplinary research from four perspectives: historical background, cultural background of infectious diseases (views on disease and life and death), social disparities, and global health governance.
As a culmination of this research, we are holding an international symposium on March 15, 2025, to share our research findings.
At this symposium, we are pleased to welcome Honorary Professor Keiji Fukuda of the University of Hong Kong, who led global pandemic responses as Assistant Director-General of the WHO, to give a keynote speech titled “Pandemic Preparedness in the Post-COVID Era.”
He will discuss what the world should do to prepare for future pandemics, as well as the challenges and important policy guidelines from a global perspective.
In the Discussion section, Professor Keiji Fukuda will participate as a discussant, and we will compile final recommendations that contribute to the reconstruction of an international framework for preparing for future pandemics, drawing on global knowledge and lessons from Japan’s experience.
