Tenure-Track Faculty Positions at the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization

Tohoku University Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization is a world-leading research center for large-scale genomic analysis, operating one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive general-population biobanks. To pioneer next-generation personalized healthcare and prevention, ToMMo has built an “Integrated Biobank” based on a prospective cohort study of over 150,000 participants, including a highly unique three-generation cohort. Furthermore, ToMMo drives cutting-edge genomic research, having completed Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for over 120,000 individuals.
3.Job Responsibilities:
Successful applicants will establish and lead independent research groups as Principal Investigators (PIs) in one of the three fields below.
I.AI-driven Genomic and Information Science
Advance data-driven life science research that leverages AI and machine learning, underpinned by large-scale genomic and omics data as well as supercomputing infrastructure.
Demonstrate outstanding leadership in spearheading next-generation genomic informatics through collaboration with domestic and international partners.
II.Life-Course Omics Science
Lead research to extend human healthspan through cutting-edge multi-omics analysis, capitalizing on the unique strengths of ToMMo’s cohort samples and data.
Conduct original research that delves into the fundamental principles of human biology by integrating longitudinal life-course health and disease data with large-scale omics information.
Ⅲ.Disease Cell Biology
Leverage core biobank resources, including cells and biospecimens linked to genotypic, longitudinal health information, and environmental factors, to drive original research using iPS cells for elucidating disease mechanisms, drug discovery, and regenerative medicine.
4.Qualifications:
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. upon taking up the post and have outstanding achievements in the above-mentioned fields of expertise.
5.Start Date:
April 1, 2027, or as soon as possible thereafter
6.Compensation:
(1) Salary: To be determined in accordance with university regulations, based on experience. Annual salary system.
Approx. starting from 9,000,000 JPY
Commuting allowance may also be provided
(2) Employment type: Full-time
(3) Term: Tenure-Track Appointment of 5 years (No reappointments)
This is a tenure-track position. Candidates who successfully pass the tenure review before the end of the appointment term will be promoted to a tenured Associate Professor. The result of the tenure review will be communicated at least one year before the end of the appointment term.
(4) Working Hours: Discretionary Labor System for Professional Work. In general, the hours are from 8:30 to 17:15, but individuals have the discretion to manage their own hours.
(5) Days off: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and New Year’s holiday (from December 29 to January 3)
(6) Insurance Benefits: Enrollment in the MEXT Mutual Aid Association for health and pension insurance, employment insurance, and Worker’s Accident Compensation Insurance
(7) Research Funding: Basic research funding of 1,000,000 JPY will be provided annually, along with funding to hire one postdoctoral researcher. Successful candidates will be expected to proactively secure external funding as well.
