Have you ever imagined how does the implementation of dementia care in another side of the world, for example, Indonesia? In Indonesia, most of the care is done by family. The scarcity of the facility providing care and support, also the negative image that still alive and thriving in society causing the underutilization of long-term care facilities. I have been interested in gerontology nursing since I was an undergraduate student, from the hospital and long-term care facilities internship I faced issues related to dementia care that I cannot comprehend with my current knowledge. Therefore, I decided to gain work experience by working at a long-term care facility in Japan. But it turned out that only relying on experience alone is not enough to answer the problems. Hence, I made my decision to continue my study to attain a better understanding of dementia care.

Continuing my study is the best decision I have made in my life. It was hard at the beginning since I am taking a general course, I need to attend the class using Japanese, discuss and do presentations in Japanese. But all the hardships are worth the effort. I developed my Japanese skills, obtained a better understanding of not only dementia care but also gerontology and geriatrics nursing, and my unsolved question is finally answered one by one.

My research is about “Validity and Reliability Evaluation of The Indonesian Version of Person-Centered Care Assessment Tool (P-CAT)”. P-CAT is a tool to measure the extent to which dementia care staff rate their aged-care setting to be person-centered. First, I would like to explain what is Person-Centered Care (PCC) and why it is crucial in dementia care. Person-centered in dementia care is first mentioned by Professor Thomas Kitwood. Experts of Alzheimer`s disease explain PCC as care that focuses on the needs of the individual and dependent upon understanding the person through interpersonal relationship. This care allowed people with dementia to be accepted and respected by the people around them. Since P-CAT evaluates the core concepts of PCC, the development of the Indonesian version of P-CAT will make it possible to measure the degree of PCC practice of dementia care in Indonesia and will contribute to assessing and improving the quality of dementia care in Indonesia.

The atmosphere of my lab is really supportive for study and self-development. They support us not only to become a good scholar but also a good nurse, colleague, and researcher. I can feel the sense of dedication of my professor and lecturers in molding their graduates to have great virtue.

I think Tohoku University deserves the title of Top University in Japan. Tohoku University provides the students with the best education and facilities. For non-Japanese speaking international students who wish to enroll in Tohoku University, there are classes in English. In the middle of the corona pandemic, we can stay connected with other international students by joining online chatting sessions held by International Exchange Office. Moreover, for you who wish to learn Japanese, they also provide us with a Japanese class and Japanese chatting time and allowed us to interact with native speakers. For a Muslim like me, I do not have any difficulties finding halal food (food that free from any component that Muslims are prohibited from consuming according to Islamic law), since the university provides them in the canteen, and they also provide a prayer room for pray.

In the near future, I wish I could continue my study to a higher degree. I want to brush up my skill and knowledge on gerontology nursing especially dementia care. After graduating, I hope I could contribute to the development of elderly care, nursing education, and nursing research in my home country.

To be honest, I did not recognize that Tohoku University is ranked first among universities in Japan. I searched a laboratory that corresponds to my research interest and found Gerontological and Home Healthcare Nursing under Tohoku University that I could not find in another university. From this, I came to realize that Tohoku University provides a broad range of research interests from the novel to the latest one.

I came from a tropical country famous for the warm weather, but here in Sendai, I need to adapt to the cold since it is located on the north side of Japan. Besides the weather, I don`t have much difficulty on living, I can find halal restaurants, easy access to public transportation, plenty of shopping malls, and tourist spots.

mylife

Photography has always been my number one hobby besides movies and music. Indonesia only has two seasons unlike Japan, so in my leisure time, I enjoy taking pictures of seasonal nature. I travel to different cities in Japan to satisfy my passion for nature photography.

For me, I do not need to go anywhere to get good pictures as Seiryo Campus provides me the perfect place. There is different scenery each season that will soothe you. After the corona pandemic struck the world, I do not have a chance to travel and taking pictures to witness the beauty of the four seasons in Miyagi. I hope I can realize it near in the future, and I can`t wait for it.

I graduated from Airlangga University, Faculty of Nursing, Indonesia in 2015, and decided to work at Elderly Long-term Care Hospital in Aichi under Economic Partnership Agreement Indonesia-Japan until 2020 and obtained a qualification as a Japan Care-worker. I faced enormous difficulty and ethical issues while caring for people with dementia, to answer my questions and broaden my horizons related to dementia care, I decided to continue my study at Tohoku University, Gerontological and Home Healthcare Nursing under the supervision of Professor Ozaki Akiko.

I was recruited as a research assistant at Tohoku University Advance Graduate Program for Future Medicine and Health Care to get experience and a better understanding of super-aged society issues and future medicine. Gladly, through this program, I have chances to experience hospital training, join discussions, and attending seminars related to future medicine. Last year, I got my JLPT N1 (Japanese Advance Level) but still need a lot to improve, so feel free to start a conversation with me and teach me about Japan.
