Researchers from various backgrounds work together
to develop interdisciplinary research and develop
cutting-edge drug discovery and regenerative medicine
My research ranges from molecular biology to drug discovery and medical device development, as well as hydrodynamic analysis. In the laboratory, not only clinicians with a background in neurosurgery and neurology but also researchers from various backgrounds, such as AI and optical engineering experts and those from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences are working together to conduct interdisciplinary research. In our research on SMTP-7, a novel thrombolytic and brain-protective drug for cerebral infarction, and multilineage-differentiating stress enduring (Muse) cells therapy for cerebral infarction (Fig. 1), we carried out basic research in our laboratory and were even able to conduct clinical trials ourselves. A distinctive feature is that we are comprehensively involved in everything from basic to translational research as well as clinical trials all by ourselves. Recently, we have been working on research to clarify the whole picture of transcription and translation with a focus on tRNA modification (Fig. 2) and the characteristic analysis of cell populations using flow cytometry based on high-speed imaging technology (Fig. 3), which has broadened the scope of our research.
Although it is still a small laboratory, the number of members has increased noticeably, including one professor, one associate professor, three assistant professors, two research assistants, six graduate students in neurosurgery, one graduate student in neurology, five graduate students belonging to our laboratory (four of whom are overseas students), two experimental assistants and two secretaries. Due to the relatively high proportion of young staff, they get on well with each other and recently seem to enjoy going to baseball batting cages together. Four other medical undergraduate students have also been showing up to do research with us.
Of course I would like students to achieve excellence in research and develop research together, but I also want students to feel the fun of research and the joy of satisfying their intellectual curiosity. Students who are at all interested in research should not hesitate to visit my laboratory. We do not impose a laboratory-specific topic on students; as a general rule, students who have a research topic they would like to work on are encouraged to do so. There will be times when things don’t go well, but students can learn a lot from mistakes and recover from them to some extent, so taking the first step is essential. As the laboratory is an English-speaking environment, it also gives students the opportunity to get used to English.
Students from the School of Medicine as well as the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences have joined my laboratory, so the career paths are varied. It is a new laboratory, launched just in 2018, and there are still only a few non-medical graduates, but they have all found good employment (e.g. at Epson). Some students became faculty members of our laboratory after completing their degrees and are still working with us.
We also accept overseas working people, so it is possible to study while working at a hospital or company. Although some research topics are difficult to select due to time constraints, there are a lot of topics that can be tackled in a limited time, so there is no need to worry.
A major strength is that, as a comprehensive university, Tohoku University has a large number of researchers with different skills, not only those affiliated with the School of Medicine and the University Hospital. In addition, the hurdles for collaboration with other graduate schools are low and we can work with respect for each other. Once we take one step forward, excellent collaborative research opportunities will be available.
A wide range of postgraduate lectures are offered with face-to-face, online or on demand formats and it is also possible to attend lectures in other faculties. It is a university that offers various development possibilities depending on the student’s motivation and nobody will regret choosing it.
Recently playing with my children's toys has been a good distraction. I have two children aged three and one, and I let them play with a 2×2 Rubik's cube while I changed their nappies. But I myself got hooked on the toy and bought a 3×3 one and then 4×4! I found it somewhat stress-relieving to vacantly play with the cubes. Later, I also bought Perplexus, a 3D ball-in-a-maze puzzle for children. I was surprised at how difficult it was, even though I bought the easiest one. I am wondering if I should also buy the medium and hard level ones.
After graduating from Tohoku University School of Medicine in 2003, I immediately joined the Department of Neurosurgery and studied at the Tohoku University Hospital and related hospitals. From 2006 to 2009, I studied as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Neurosurgery, Stanford University School of Medicine and obtained my Ph.D. (medicine) in 2009. After working as Assistant Professor and Lecturer in the Department of Neurosurgery, I have been in my current position since 2018. While developing research on molecular signaling after cerebral infarction and tRNA modification, I am working on translational research and conducting clinical trials and other activities in the fields of drug discovery and regenerative medicine.
