Diploma Policy
1. Tohoku University Master’s Degree Programs
Tohoku University confers a master’s degree (Medical Sciences, Disability Sciences, Nursing, Health Sciences, or Public Health) on students who have achieved the following goals:
i) To possess the ability to solve issues in clinical practice from a researcher’s perspective and pursue original research in a relevant field on the basis of a broad perspective and specialized knowledge of medicine and medical sciences.
ii) To be able to contribute to the development of research in medical science, disability science, nursing, health sciences, or public health, or to be able to contribute to the development of medicine and welfare as a practitioner of next-generation medicine, based on the medical needs of society and possessing a highly ethical and responsible outlook.
iii) To possess international perspectives and communication skills, and use these to understand global cutting-edge medicine and medical sciences, and be able to share world-class research results, or demonstrate world-class medical skills.
2. Tohoku University Doctoral Degree Programs
Tohoku University confers a doctoral degree (Medical Sciences, Disability Sciences, Nursing, or Health Sciences) on students who have achieved the following goals:
i) To have abundant knowledge and education, and specialist knowledge of medicine and medical science, possess abilities that enable multi-disciplinary development linked to basic medical research and other fields, and to carry out and lead independent original research in a specialized field.
ii) To be able to drive new learning that will contribute to the development of next-generation medicine, to contribute to the development of medicine and medical science as a leader in their relevant field, and to possess a highly ethical and responsible outlook, based on social needs to realize next-generation medicine.
iii) To possess a high-level international perspective and excellent communication skills and use these to share world-class research results, and through this lead research in their relevant field nationally and globally.
Curriculum Policy
1. Tohoku University Master’s Degree Programs
The university structures and implements its educational curricula as follows, to ensure that students meet the goals described in the Diploma Policy:
i) Offer multidisciplinary and specialized subjects relating to medicine and medical science, and provide a learning environment that allows students to concentrate on research activities relating to the creation of their master’s thesis.
ii) Provide opportunities to develop the high ethical standards required to pursue medicine and research, to study cutting-edge medical research results and medical technology within Japan and overseas, and provide a practical venue that enables students to obtain communication ability and high-level specialist skills to practice medicine, according to their needs.
iii) Give clear criteria for the evaluation of academic achievement and conduct appropriate reviews based on a student’s master’s thesis or specified topics.
2. Tohoku University Doctoral Degree Programs
The University structures and implements its educational curricula as follows, to ensure that students meet the goals described in the Diploma Policy:
i) Offer multidisciplinary and specialized subjects necessary for students to advance their research, maintain thorough research guidance through the combined use of careful individual guidance in affiliated laboratories and a cross-disciplinary guidance system with multiple staff, and promote the acquisition of abundant high-level learning and specialist knowledge and skills.
ii) Provide opportunities to develop the high ethical standards required to pursue medicine and research, to develop leadership through interaction with students from different areas of study, and to study cutting-edge medical research results and medical technology within Japan and overseas, and provide a learning environment that enables students to aim to become global leaders in the world of medicine and medical science.
iii) Make it clear that sharing research results of a world-class standard is a condition for completing the course, and conduct appropriate reviews of research results based on a student’s doctoral thesis.
