人生を変えた大学院入学　一瞬一瞬を楽しみながら学びの連続

●大学院に進学しようと思った理由を教えてください

学士号と修士号取得の経験や、タンザニア国内有数の医療系大学で働いた経験から、継続的な学習と自己成長の重要性を認識しました。博士課程に進学することで、最先端の研究に従事でき、未来に有意義な影響を与えるためのスキルが身に付くと思ったからです。
私は、人々の幸せに貢献したいという大きな夢を持っています。昨今の世界における複雑な課題を解決するには、未来を創ることに積極的に参加し、自身の専門分野において高度な知識を身に付けることが必要です。博士号の取得は、自分の能力を高め、知的視野を広げ、複雑な課題を解決するために必要な専門知識を習得し、人間性の向上につながるチャンスです。これら全てが私の原動力となっています。

●What made you decide to go to graduate school?

Having worked in higher learning institutions and my dreams, as well as my previous experiences during my studies, helped me recognize the significance of continuous learning and personal growth. I have a deep dream to contribute to the well-being of humanity, and I strongly believe that pursuing doctoral studies will equip me with all the necessary skills to engage in and conduct cutting-edge research and make a meaningful impact on the future. This is because to actively participate in shaping our future and contribute to bringing solutions to some of the complicated challenges of today’s world, the pursuit of knowledge and the acquisition of advanced expertise in my field is necessary. Therefore, for me, Ph.D. is an opportunity to enhance my abilities, gain the expertise required to address complex challenges, and contribute to the betterment of humanity. By embarking on this academic journey, I aim to improve and strengthen my research capabilities that will help me serve both the academic community and society in the future.

●進学してみて、どうでしたか？

大学院入学の合格通知を受け取った時は、これまで経験したことがないくらい興奮し、うれしかったです。人生を変えるような体験でした。入学してからは学びの連続です。この学びを生かしてスキルを磨き、研究コミュニティーを確立していきたいと考えています。新しい知識や技術を身に付けることは簡単ではありませんが、大学院生活の一瞬一瞬を楽しみ、自己成長し続けていきたいです。

●How did you like it when you went to school?

My desire has always been to learn and relearn to become a better version.  The time I received acceptance information for enrollment in graduate school was one of the most delightful experiences I have ever experienced. I can recall the moment I received an email from my supervisor, one of the life-changing experiences that was full of joy and excitement. Ever since, my life in graduate school has been a learning experience, and I will keep utilizing this opportunity to acquire skills and establish a long-time research community. I understand that it is challenging to acquire new knowledge or skills everywhere especially in new environment, I enjoy every moment of my graduate school life, and my time at graduate school is a continuous journey of learning and personal growth.

アフリカのゲノム研究発展が世界の公衆衛生につながる

●研究テーマとそれを選んだ理由を教えてください

AIを含む統計的かつ遺伝学的手法や技法を用いて、複雑な疾患や障害を遺伝的またはゲノムの観点から解明することです。特に不特定多数の人々を対象としています。

発展途上国には知識格差があり、適切に対処しなければ、途上国における精密医療などの次世代医療の促進を妨げます。タンザニアは、他の多くのアフリカ諸国と同様にゲノム研究が遅れていて、120以上の民族言語集団がいるという東アフリカで最も多様性の高い国であるにもかかわらず、ほとんどの民族に関する遺伝情報が不足しています。このギャップに対処するため、私が選んだ研究プロジェクトの一つは、タンザニアの集団遺伝子を解析し、ゲノム研究がよく行われているであろう日本人を含む他の集団の知見と結び付けることでした。最終的には、この研究で得られた成果が、将来の研究のベースラインデータとなり、国内外の既存の取り組みに貢献し、科学コミュニティーに知識を提供するとともに、タンザニアにおけるさらなる医学研究の新たな章を開くことができると期待しています。

アフリカは解剖学的に現代人の源であることが知られています。従って、アフリカのゲノムと疾病をアフリカ人口ゲノミクスの観点から解析することは、疾病の病態生理を含む公衆衛生上のいくつかの課題に取り組むために必要であり、アフリカのみならず世界全体のさまざまな疾病に対する治療戦略に役立つと希望を持っています。

●What is your research topic and why did you choose it?

My research interests revolve around understanding complex diseases or disorders from a genetic or genomic perspective using statistical genetic methods and techniques, including AI, especially in underrepresented populations.

There is a knowledge gap in developing countries that, if not addressed properly, will hinder and limit the implementation of next-generation medical treatments such as precision medicine in these populations. Tanzania, like many other African countries, lags in genomic research, and as such, there is a lack of genetic information about the different conditions of most ethnic groups, despite being the most diverse country in East Africa with more than 120 ethnolinguistic groups.  To address this gap, during my graduate school, one of the research projects I chose to focus on is understanding the genetics of the Tanzania population and perhaps linking them with findings from other populations, including the Japanese population, where genomic research has been well conducted. The expectation is that, in the end, the research findings from this study will provide baseline data for future studies, contribute to existing national and international efforts, add knowledge to the scientific community, as well as open another new chapter for further medical research in Tanzania.

Africa is known to be a source of anatomically modern humans; therefore, understanding African genomics and diseases from the African population genomics perspective is necessary to address some of the public health challenges, including disease pathophysiology, which will help us determine treatment strategies for various diseases, not only for the African population but also for the entire global population.

●研究室の雰囲気はどうですか？

田宮元教授と高山順准教授の下で、研究科内で最も多様性に富んだ研究室のメンバーの一員となっています。さまざまなバックグラウンドや経歴を持つ研究員が、医療分野における公衆衛生上の国際的な課題解決策を探るために、切磋琢磨（せっさたくま）しています。この環境は私にとって、学び、成長する上で豊かな経験を与えてくれました。このような多様なコミュニティーに参加することで、知識を広げるだけでなく、技術的な研究スキルも向上できているのだと思います。また、指導教官、スタッフ、研究室のメンバー全員から、いつも心強いサポートと指導を受けています。このサポートが私の学問的な成長を助長させてくれているのだと、深く感謝しています。

●What is the lab’s atmosphere like?

I am fortunate to be part of the most diverse laboratory/department in our school, under Prof. Tamiya and Assoc Prof. Takayama. There is a vibrant mix of diverse people from different backgrounds and fields. This kind of learning environment has created a unique experience for me to learn and grow. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to engage in such a diverse community, which not only broadens my theoretical knowledge in my area of research but also enhances my technical research skills and allow me to learn from different people. Moreover, I am thankful for the unwavering support and guidance I have always been receiving from my supervisor, staff, and all members of our lab. Their support and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping my personal and academic development, and I deeply appreciate their efforts.

グローバルな課題に立ち向かい、多様な専門家と共同研究を

●東北大学の良いところは？

とても語り尽くせません。トップ大学であり続けるさまざまな理由がそこにはあると思います。建学の精神の一つでもある「門戸開放」、人に寄り添った研究・教育、最先端の研究インフラ、国内外の学生をサポートする優秀な部署など、他大学とは一線を画す独特な面がたくさんあります。
さらに、東北大学は仙台市の美しい自然の中にあり、この環境は本当に恵まれています。穏やかな雰囲気の中で学べるだけでなく、キャンパスが仙台市の中心部にあるため生活に必要なサービスを手近に得られ、非常に便利です。学問の追求と、仙台での素晴らしく豊かな体験が、人生において最も充実した時間を与えてくれています。

●What are the positive aspects of Tohoku University?

Tohoku University has many best aspects to tell, some of which are the reasons why it remains the top university. I understand that it will be challenging for me to cover every beautiful aspect of our university, especially for a large university like this. However, the open-door policy, people-centered research and education, state-of-the-art research infrastructure, and excellent as well as supportive units and departments for both local and international students at Tohoku University, are some of the few unique aspects that set Tohoku University apart from other institutions.
Moreover, the university is strategically located at the heart of Sendai City, which not only offers a peaceful atmosphere for learning but also provides convenient access to many essential services at our fingertips. This combination of academic pursuits and the accompanying wonderful experiences that this City offers truly makes my study time one of the most remarkable experiences in my life.

●今後の目標や抱負を教えてください

短期的な目標は、仙台での日常生活や交流に欠かせない日本語の会話能力を高め学習を続けることです。私は日本の人々、文化、そして言葉が大好きです。周りから学びを得るためには、ある程度の日本語能力は必要ですね。
卒業後の目標の一つは、研究の道を進みポスドクとして経験を積み、専門分野をより深く掘り下げ、新しい知識や最先端の発見に貢献することです。博士課程で学んだスキルが、将来、差し迫ったグローバルな課題に立ち向かい、地域や世界の人々の生活を向上させる有意義な貢献につながることを期待しています。インパクトのある研究成果は世界中の多様な専門家の共同作業によって生み出されると信じているので、指導教官をはじめとする全ての同僚と、実りある共同研究を続けたいと考えています。

●What are your goals and expectations for the future?

My short-term goal is to continue learning  including improving my Japanese-language speaking ability, which is vital for my interactions with people and my daily life in Sendai and Japan. I love people, language, and Japanese culture, and, I know the only way to fully learn from the community, and the people around me will require me to have a certain level of Japanese ability.
After graduation, one of my primary goals is to continue my research path and go into my postdoctoral experience. I wish to delve deeper into my field and contribute to new knowledge and discoveries. I hope that the skills received after my doctoral training will help me make impactful and meaningful contributions to humanity in the future. I also wish to maintain fruitful collaborations with my supervisor, mentors, and all colleagues beyond my doctoral studies. I understand that impactful research results involve collaborative efforts of diverse experts.

読書が趣味で、その楽しさに浸り新しい学びに時間を割いています。休日はキャンパス内を散歩するのも楽しみですね。ジョギングをすることもあり、楽しみながら心身を鍛えています。同僚や留学生の友人たちと一緒に、大河原や松島、七ケ宿など仙台近郊に出かけることもあります。学業の合間のリフレッシュになり、友情も深まります。

I like reading, which helps me find aspirations, so I dedicate most of my time to read to learn something new. During the weekends, I like to walk while enjoying the beauty of our campus. I also like going for jogs, which allows me to enjoy and exercise both my body and mind. I also truly appreciate the friendship company shared by colleagues and all my international friends in Sendai. Together, we sometimes visit various area outskirts of Sendai City, including Ogawara, Matsushima, and Shichigahama, which provides us with refreshing breaks from our academic pursuits and fosters a sense of unity.
