OUTLINE

The focus of our laboratory is to explore whether the exposure to environmental factors including heavy metals and other chemical substances affects development and growth of children. Currently, two main projects are ongoing. One is Tohoku Study, a birth cohort study in the north-east coastal areas with the children reached in their adolescence. The other is a nationwide survey of 100,000 mother-child pairs conducted by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. The children reached the age of elementary school, and the data is being collected to verify the effects of environmental exposure such as cigarette smoke, heavy metals and other chemical substances, or allergens during the fetal period. In addition, we investigate the concentration of heavy metals in breast milk and baby food. We also plan to study the effects of environmental factors on infantile/pediatric lung development.
