OUTLINE

Our department treats patients with lung cancer, metastatic lung tumor, mediastinal tumor, chest wall tumor, pneumothorax, pleural malignant mesothelioma, and terminal chronic progressive lung disease (lung transplantation). In 2020, there were 275 operations, of which 180 were operations for pulmonary malignancies and 12 were related to lung transplantation.
The main themes of our research are related to lung cancer and lung transplantation. In addition to clinical research aimed at improving surgical results, we conduct molecular biological and pathological research on lung cancer, research related to lung preservation, ischemia- reperfusion lung injury, acute and chronic rejection after lung transplantation. In particular, immunology is a field that extends research on lung cancer and lung transplantation, and is the main research theme of our department. We are also developing basic research on cell therapy for various lung diseases with early clinical application in mind. Furthermore, research related to lung tissue regeneration, research to create lungs from stem cells, and aging biology which is the mission of our institute, are on progress.

当科は、肺、縦隔、胸壁などの胸部疾患のうち、外科的治療を要するものを診療の対象としています。主な対象疾患は肺癌、転移性肺腫瘍、縦隔腫瘍、胸壁腫瘍、気胸、胸膜悪性中皮腫、終末期慢性進行性肺疾患（肺移植）などです。2020年の手術件数は275件で、うち肺悪性腫瘍の手術が180件、肺移植関連が12件でした。
　当教室の研究の主なテーマは、肺がんと肺移植に関わるものです。手術成績向上を目指した臨床研究はもとより、多くの基礎・臨床研究分野のご協力のもと、肺癌や難治性肺疾患の分子生物学的・病理学的研究、肺保存に関わる研究、虚血・再灌流性肺障害に関わる研究、肺移植後急性・慢性拒絶反応に関わる研究などを展開しています。特に免疫学は、がん研究と臓器移植研究にまたがる分野であり、当教室の研究のメインテーマとなっています。様々な肺疾患に対する細胞治療も早期の臨床応用を念頭に置いて基礎研究を展開しています。さらに、肺組織の再生に関わる研究、幹細胞から肺を作り出す研究、当研究所の使命である加齢医学研究すなわち加齢に伴う肺組織の変化が様々な疾患・病態にどのような影響をもたらすかについての研究も開始しています。
