OUTLINE

The aim of our laboratory is to clarify the factors that affect the child development through following cohort studies.

1. The Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS)
We participate in JECS and are responsible for the participants in the Miyagi area. JECS is an ongoing nationwide and government funded birth cohort. Approximately 100,000 expecting mothers were recruited in designated 15 areas between January 2011 and March 2014. The mothers and their children have been followed regularly since then. This birth cohort study is aimed at investigating the influence of environmental factors including chemical substances such as Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), lead, mercury, and nicotine on the health and development of children.

2. Premature birth cohort
All infants who were born in the Miyagi prefecture and whose birth weight were < 1,250 g have been registered and regularly checked up their growth and development since 2005. Their gestational age, birth weight, and treatment histories have been recorded and accumulated. Using this database, we explore causal relationship between developmental disorder in later life and perinatal environmental factors including premature birth itself, several morbidities such as chronic lung disease and patent ductus arteriosus, and medical practice.
