Our department conducts clinical research in the field of functional neurosurgery, especially on epilepsy surgery and deep brain stimulation. Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent neurological diseases, and there are about 1 million patients in Japan. About 30% of these patients have drug-resistant seizures, for whom surgical treatment is indicated. Our research topics include the efficacy of early surgery in infants and children with epilepsy, the development of minimally invasive surgical techniques, the relationship between diagnostic imaging (MRI, PET, etc.) and surgical outcomes, and functional analysis of the brain using intracranial EEG data. We are also conducting genomic analysis of epileptogenic tumors and malformation of cortical development using surgical specimens registered in the NCNP Biobank, which is aimed at elucidating new diagnostic methods and pathogenesis. We also investigate the efficacy of deep brain stimulation for movement disorders such as Parkinson\'s disease and Tourette\'s syndrome in cooperation with the Departments of Neurology and Psychiatry.
