OUTLINE

The threat of emerging infectious diseases, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the risks of healthcare-associated infections, and the concern about antimicrobial resistant organisms have been increasing worldwide. The mission of the Department of Infectious Diseases is to implement basic and clinical research on infectious disease diagnosis and treatment, clinical microbiology, and infection prevention and control (e.g., mechanisms and molecular epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance, One Health, establishment of diagnostic methods for infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship and therapy, and development of infection prevention strategies and control measures). We aim to facilitate practice and research on clinical infectious diseases and infection prevention by using new technologies and advanced molecular methods. Our department also provides education programs for medical students and healthcare personnel so that they understand how to prevent, diagnose and treat infectious diseases. We also conduct clinical management and infection control for antimicrobial resistance at Tohoku University Hospital and promote diagnostic stewardship with rapid molecular tests and an antimicrobial stewardship program. Networks are vitally important in the crisis management of infectious diseases, and, as part of a group, we are responsible for managing a regional infection control network.

近年、国境を越えて新興・再興感染症の脅威が高まってきており、感染症は世界中の医療関連施設、地域社会全体の危機と認識され、感染症対策がますます重要になってきております。感染症は、微生物が人から人あるいは物から人に伝播するという特徴があるため、個人や病棟・医療施設を超えて、さらには地域全体に感染症が伝播・拡大し、危機的な状況を引き起こす可能性があります。総合感染症学分野では、臨床感染症学、感染制御学、感染症疫学、臨床微生物学などの各領域においてさまざまな基礎的・臨床的研究(薬剤耐性菌の耐性メカニズムと分子疫学、ワンヘルス、感染症新規診断法の確立、抗菌薬適正使用と感染症治療、新規感染制御策の開発など)に取り組むとともに、学生教育や研究者の育成、感染症の診断・治療・予防に関する総合的な対応能力を有する専門的人材の育成をおこなっています。また、総合感染症科では、感染管理室と協力して、感染症診療、感染制御、感染症疫学などに関する専門的資格を有する教員が、感染症の診断・治療・予防に関する総合的マネジメント業務を行い、東北大学病院ならびに地域の医療関連施設での感染症対策を実践しております。
