OUTLINE

The Department of Behavioral Neurology and Cognitive Neuroscience was first established in Japan as a clinical department specializing in behavioral neurology and cognitive neuroscience in the Disability Sciences, Graduate school of Medicine. The mission of our department is to reduce cognitive disabilities by investigating clinical symptoms and finding their neural mechanisms. The Tohoku University Hospital Department of Behavioral Neurology provides comprehensive consultative services, diagnostic testing and treatment for a broad spectrum of cognitive and behavioral changes.
The main research fields include disabilities of attention, perception, action, emotion, memory, language, executive and spatial functions as a result of diseases or injuries of the nervous system. We study neurodegenerative disorders, such as Lewy body disease and Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, brain tumor and normal pressure hydrocephalus. Our department is one of the leading centers for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus and offers state-of-the-art clinical diagnostics, treatment and chronic care for people with this disease that affects nearly four hundred thousand people in Japan. Our multidisciplinary approach with the latest technologies including advanced brain imaging, neuropsychological and neurophysiological measures allows us to find better medical care for cognitive disabilities.
