言語と環境の違いを乗り越え、いま「研究が面白い」

●大学院に進学しようと思った理由を教えてください

大学院に進学することは、学部1年生の時から計画していました。自分の専攻について、研究経験をもっと積む必要があると思ったからです。大学院での勉強では、自立する能力を高めるだけでなく、チームワークを通して協力する能力を高めることができます。能力を向上させたい、あるいはもっと良い仕事を見つけたいと思っている方にとって、大学院進学は素晴らしい選択かもしれません。

I have planned to go to the graduate school when I was still a college freshman. I think my major is indeed needed more research to accumulate research experience. During the study in the graduate school, not only the capacity of independence can be increased, but also the ability of cooperation can be enhanced while doing teamwork. I think this is the meaning of the graduate school. It can be a great choice to go to the graduate school, no matter you want to improve your ability, or you just want to find a better job.

●進学してみて、どうでしたか？

大学院での勉強は学部での勉強とは全然違います。以前の学習方法と比較して、問題をより独立して考え、解決する必要があります。最初は、言語と学習の新しい環境に適応することに多くの時間を費やしました。しかしありがたいことに、研究室の先生と先輩たちが親切に手伝ってくれて、いま、大学院で研究するのがとても面白いです。特に、研究の計画、実行、結論の方法について、多くの有用な知識を習得しました。毎月定期的に開かれるセミナーで研究の進捗（しんちょく）状況を発表する必要があり、それを通して発表の能力も向上できました。これらは全て、将来の研究に役立てられる貴重な経験だと思います。

The study in the graduate school is totally different from that in the college. Compared to previous methods of study, I need to think and solute problems more independently. Initially, it was inevitable to spend much time on adapting the new environment of language and study. Thankfully, the teachers and predecessors in the lab are kind to help me to overcome all of difficulties. Now I find it very interesting to investigate this field I prefer. And I have acquired plenty of useful knowledge in the graduate school, especially about how to plan, perform and conclude research. Also, we have regular seminars every month where we need to do presentations for our research progresses. Through it, I have improved my oral ability in public. I suppose all of those things are precious experience which I can use into my future research.

先生の一つの質問がきっかけで関心を持った研究テーマ

●研究テーマとそれを選んだ理由を教えて下さい

研究テーマは後方歩行の性差です。学部生の時からすでに歩行分析に興味を持っていて、学部論文のテーマは後方歩行にも関連していました。後方歩行は、バランス能力と運動システムを改善できる歩行リハビリテーションにおいて人気のあるトレーニング方法です。従って、トレーニングの効率を向上させるためには、後方歩行のメカニズムを研究する必要があります。研究目的として性差を選んだ理由は、学位論文を書いている時に大学の先生から、後方歩行の性差があるかどうか聞かれたことがきっかけです。その時に面白い研究テーマだと思っていたので、出江紳一先生と修士論文について話し合った際、すぐにこのテーマに決めました。

My research theme is gender differences of backward walking. Actually, when I was in college, I already had much interest in gait analysis. And the theme of my undergraduate thesis was also related to backward walking. Backward walking has become a popular training method of walking rehabilitation, which can improve balance ability and motor system. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the mechanism behind it to improve the efficiency of training. The reason why I chose the gender differences as my research objective is that one of my college teachers just asked me if there were some gender differences during backward walking when I worked on my bachelor thesis. At that time, I thought it could be an interesting research theme, so when I discussed my master thesis with Prof. Izumi, I just came up with this theme immediately.

多様な視点とアイデア得られる研究室での話し合いと交流

●研究室の雰囲気はどうですか？

研究室の雰囲気は快適です。チューターがいましたので、すぐに研究室になじむことができました。研究についての疑問を研究室の人たちと話し合っている時の気持ちが好きです。それを通して、いままで考えたことのない役に立つアイデアをたくさん得ることができます。余暇には、一緒に鍋を楽しんだり、中国と日本の文化の違いについて自由に話し合ったりします。

The atmosphere of the lab usually makes me feel comfortable when I stay there. As I have mentioned before, I had a predecessor as my tutor so that I was able to integrate myself into the lab as soon as I could. I like the feeling when I am discussing a question about the research with others in the lab. Through it, I really gain many useful ideas I had never thought before. In spare time, we will enjoy hotpot together, and chat freely about cultural differences between China and Japan.

●東北大学の良いところは？

最初に言及したいのは、素晴らしい学習環境です。親切な先生たちからの指導に加えて、先進的な設備での研究で多くの経験を積んでいます。図書館やISTUなど、多くの専門資料を提供する便利な施設もあります。また、東北大学は全ての留学生に便利なものをたくさん提供しています。例えば、新入生の時、仙台での勉強と生活に適応するのに役立つ多くの情報を提供してくれたチューターがいました。無料で受講できる日本語コースと英語コースにも参加しました。東北大学の交流留学プログラムに参加して、視野を広げられたことに感謝しています。

The first thing I want to mention is the great study environment. Besides the instruction from friendly teachers, the advanced equipment brings me lots of experience to do my research. There are also useful facilities offering number of professional materials, such as library and ISTU. Additionally, Tohoku university provides lots of convenient things for every foreign student. For example, when I was a freshman at the university, there was a tutor who offered much information to help me adapt study and life in Sendai. And I also attended Japanese courses and English courses which were totally free for students. I appreciate that I participated in the exchange program of Tohoku university which really widened my horizon. 

これまでの知識をフィックスさせ、さらに研究を続ける道へ

●今後の目標や抱負を教えてください

今年の9月に卒業しますが、博士を目標として、進学する予定です。2年間の研究で人間の運動に関する知識をよく勉強しましたので、後期課程でスポーツ科学にフィックスしたいと思っています。大学の教師になって、自分の研究を続けられるように頑張ります。

東北大学への留学は人生を変える正しい決定だった

●日本の、東北大を選んだ理由を教えてください

リハビリテーションの分野では日本は常に世界のトップにいるので、大学院に進学することを決めた時、日本に留学することにしました。どの大学に出願すべきかについて教授に相談したところ、東北大学について教えてもらい、そこに行って研究を続けることができれば非常に素晴らしいかもしれないと言われました。東北大学のウェブサイトを見て、幸運にも自分の研究にふさわしい研究室を見つけました。興味のある研究テーマを選ぶことは重要で、そうしないと研究中に多くの困難があります。その後、出江研究室に申し込み、出江教授からオファーをもらい、ここに来ました。自分の人生を変えた非常に正しい決定だったと思います。

When I made my mind to go to graduate school, I also decided to go to Japan to complete my master’s degree, because in the field of rehabilitation Japan is always on the top of the world. I also consulted with my professor about which university I should apply. He told me about Tohoku University, and he said it could be very excellent if I could go there and continue my research. Therefore, I looked through the website of Tohoku University, and I was so lucky that I found a suitable lab for my research interest. I think it is essential to choose a research topic you have interest in, otherwise you will meet plenty of difficulties during research. Then, I applied for IZUMI lab, and obtained the offer from Prof. Izumi, and I came here. Well, now I think I have made a very right decision which has changed my life. 

●仙台の暮らしはどうですか？

仙台が大好きです。仙台は、自分の好きな場所を見つけることができるまちです。私にとって友達との付き合いは一番のリラックスで、一緒に買い物やカラオケをしたり、秋保温泉や松島などに小旅行したりと、さまざまな選択肢があります。生活費もそれほど高くないです。でも、仙台の冬は本当に長いですね。

I love Sendai very much. Sendai is a city where you can find your own prefer place. For me, hanging out with my friends is my relaxation. Sendai provides many choices for us, for example, go shopping or Karaoke, even go excursion with friends, such as Akiho hot spring and Matsushima. The living expenses in Sendai is not very high. But the only one thing I want to mention is the winter in Sendai is really long.

休日はカメラを持って写真を撮るのが好きです。仙台には観光バス「るーぷる仙台」があり、仙台の有名な景勝地を訪れることができます。その中で、私の一番のお薦めは瑞鳳殿（ずいほうでん）です。瑞鳳殿は仙台藩主伊達政宗の霊屋で、色鮮やかな建物は季節によって異なるイメージを受けます。
